Charles Reid’s 2008/09 season at the Nationaltheater Mannheim opens with his debut as Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore, and is quickly followed by Tamino, Die Zauberflöte, and Alfredo, La Traviata. Renowned German critic, Gabor Halasz, wrote, “Charles Reid gave a vocal and musical performance of Alfredo without any limitations or boundaries, with a shimmering tenor voice, flawless technique, extraordinary feeling for style, and very clear intonation.” The summer began with Mr. Reid’s second season at the Bayreuther Festpsiele where he reprised the role of Kunz Vogelgesang in Katharina Wagner’s production of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. Charles followed this with his debut as Duca di Mantua in the Stadttheater Giessen production of Verdi’s Rigoletto. This fall also brings Mr. Reid’s debut with Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Düsseldorf, singing Sinowij in Schostakowich’s Lady Macbeth von Mzensk. In the spring, Charles debut’s as Macduff in the Nationaltheater Mannheim new production of Verdi’s Macbeth, and sings Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni. In addition to nine seasons with the Metropolitan Opera, other U.S. opera highlights include performances with San Francisco Opera, Connecticut Opera, Spoleto Festival USA, and Sarasota Opera. On the concert stage, during the 2008/09 season Charles Reid’s enters into a recording project of Haydn’s The Seasons with Amor Artis Baroque Orchestra, under the direction of Johannes Somary. In addition, he returns to the Master Chorale of Washington to sing Obadiah in Mendelssohn’s Elijah at the Kennedy Center Concert Hall and sings J.S. Bach’s Messe in H-Moll with the Melanchthon Kantorei Mannheim. Mr. Reid also joins Gunther Albers, piano, in presenting Schumann’s Dichterliebe for the Nationaltheater Mannheim. The 2007/08 season featured Charles’ debut with Boston’s Handel and Haydn Society singing Mozart’s Requiem under the baton of John Nelson. Mr. Reid’s growing concert repertoire now includes over 35 masterwork compositions. Mr. Reid’s discography includes a DVD from the Salzburger Festspiele, singing Aceste in Mozart’s Ascanio in Alba, available on Deutsche Grammophon. Ascanio in Alba is available on cd from the dTb label with the Nationaltheater Mannheim. Charles is also on Gothic Records singing the tenor solos in Alice Parker’s Melodious Accord with the Master Chorale of Washington. Mr. Reid is the recipient of prestigious awards from the Richard Tucker Music Foundation, Loren L. Zachary National Vocal Competition, Florida Grand Opera YPO Competition, Connecticut Opera Competition, and the Marjorie Lawrence International Vocal Competition. |
